TIRUCHY: With the Western Ghats witnessing monsoon rains, migration of the insect population, especially butterflies, is observed by the environmentalists from Tiruchy. Lime Butterflies have been spotted in Nagalapuram forests near Pachamalai, in Thuraiyur, in the past few months adding beauty to the Eastern Ghats.
Q Ashoka Chakkaravarthy, Wildlife Conservationist and scholar of Environmental Science, Tiruchy, who conducted the study said, “Migration of butterflies is witnessed every year when thousands of feathered guests also flock by at the Eastern Ghats of Pachamalai Hills. Last year, Darak Blue butterflies had visited Pachaimalai during this season.
This year, in and around Thuraiyur, Lime butterflies are spotted in large numbers, particularly along the whole stretch from Thuraiyur to Peramalongbalur Road, of Nagalapuram forest zone in June.” There are a number of reasons for migration of insects including favourable conditions for breeding and a suitable climate. In South India, the extremely heavy rains in the Western Ghats during monsoons trigger their move to the plains.
